Choosing an Industrial Zoom Lens for Machine Vision

An industrial zoom lens covers a continuous range of magnifications with a single optical assembly, so one inspection station can survey a whole part at low magnification and then zoom in on a detail without changing lenses. The POMEAS zoom lens range covers 6.5X, 12.5X and 14X zoom ratios in manual, motorized and motorized-rail configurations, with C-Mount interfaces for standard industrial cameras.

Motorized vs manual zoom

A motorized zoom lens drives its magnification axes with motors, so the inspection recipe changes magnification in software instead of by hand. That matters on mixed-product lines where one station serves several part numbers. Manual zoom lenses remain a practical, lower-cost choice for single-product stations or laboratory benches where magnification is set once and rarely changed.

What to confirm before selecting

  • Sensor format and pixel size — the lens must resolve the camera pixel pitch across the whole zoom range
  • Working distance — fixed on most assemblies, so confirm it fits the machine envelope
  • Field of view at both ends — the wide end sets the largest part, the tele end sets the smallest defect
  • Magnification repeatability — for measurement work the lens must return to the same position after every zoom cycle

Typical applications

Zoom lenses are used for PCB and electronics inspection, semiconductor packaging, precision moulds and cutting tools, in-line dimensional measurement, and robotic vision where the target position varies. Motorized variants integrate over RS-232 or through the machine controller for recipe-driven magnification changes.

For measurement-grade work, pair the zoom lens with coaxial illumination to control reflections on metal, glass and wafer surfaces.
