Motorized zoom lens applications in machine vision inspection stations

Motorized Zoom Lens Applications

Motorized zoom lenses appear wherever one inspection station has to cope with more than one product size, or where the magnification setting itself has to be part of an automated recipe. The application classes below are the ones POMEAS sees repeatedly in machine vision and industrial inspection projects.

1. Semiconductor and PCB inspection

Tracks, pads and solder joints are inspected at different magnifications on the same machine: a low magnification for the board overview, a high magnification for a single joint. A motorized zoom lens lets the recipe switch between these views without moving the camera or the part.

2. Optical character and code verification on small parts

When laser markings or printed codes have to be read on components that vary in size, the code height, not the part outline, sets the required magnification. A recipe-driven zoom position keeps the character height constant in pixels across the whole batch — see the chip and component OCR inspection case.

3. Multi-SKU changeover on one camera

This is the strongest economic argument for motorized zoom: one camera and one lens replacing several fixed stations, with the field of view recalled per product. The changeover time drops to the time needed to load the recipe, provided the lens position is repeatable and the focus axis is calibrated.

4. Dimensional measurement with varying fields of view

Where a part is measured as a whole first and then in detail, the measurement system needs at least two fields of view. A telecentric optical path with motorized magnification keeps distortion low at both, which matters when the two measurements have to be combined into one coordinate system.

5. Electronics and component assembly

Presence, position and orientation checks on connectors, shields and small mechanical parts, on lines where the component mix changes during the shift.

6. Multi-product inspection systems

Contract inspection and quality laboratories rarely see a single product type. A motorized zoom station with stored recipes can be reconfigured between jobs without mechanical intervention, which also shortens setup and re-qualification.

7. Machine vision research and laboratory imaging

In development work the optimum magnification is usually unknown at the start. Motorized axes make the search a programmable sweep rather than a manual trial-and-error session, and the final position can be recorded with the experiment.

Where motorized zoom is the wrong answer

  • The field of view never changes — a fixed-magnification lens gives lower distortion and a simpler calibration.
  • The accuracy requirement is at the high end of what the lens can deliver and the magnification must never drift — a fixed telecentric lens is the safer choice.
  • The problem is actually illumination, not magnification. Zooming in does not fix a low-contrast image.
  • The line runs a single product for months at a time; the motorized axes never justify their cost.

This decision logic is developed further in programmable optics for machine vision and in the FA industrial lens selection guide.
