Optical communication manufacturing lives or dies on microns. Ceramic ferrule bores, V-groove pitch in fiber arrays, transceiver sub-mount holes and the diameter of the optical fiber itself are all specified in micrometers, and they are produced in volumes that make offline lab sampling too slow. POMEAS builds inline optical measurement systems that sit directly on the production line and verify these dimensions on every part or continuously during the process.
Fiber optic production chains share one pattern: a dimension that is invisible to the eye controls whether light couples from one component into the next. Typical checkpoints include:
POMEAS HM-series inline image measuring heads use a dual-telecentric shadow projection design: a green LED parallel beam from the transmitter is imaged by a CMOS sensor in the receiver, so the measured size does not change when the part shifts within the depth of field. The standard HM-1040 measuring head covers a φ40 mm field of view with ±0.08 μm repeatability and ±1.0 μm measuring position accuracy (specification from the HM-series product manual), while the compact HM-1006 with a φ6 mm field of view targets micro-parts that need tighter tolerances.
For round products running continuously through a line – fiber, thin wire, extruded tube – the LM-1030 online laser diameter gauge measures a 0.3–30 mm range at up to 2400 measurements per second with ±0.15 μm repeatability and ±2 μm accuracy (datasheet values). The two families complement each other: image measuring heads verify multi-feature parts with holes and patterns; the laser gauge watches a continuous diameter in real time.
A Chinese automation integrator (Huatai Automation) tested a POMEAS HM-series inline measuring head on a fiber optic component with two micro-holes: 10 workpieces, each measured 5 times without re-clamping. The pooled within-piece standard deviation was 0.390 μm for hole 1, 0.493 μm for hole 2 and 0.496 μm for the hole-to-hole distance (n = 50 readings per feature). The full data set and its interpretation limits are published in our Huatai Automation case study.
HM-series inline image measuring heads for multi-feature micro-parts (holes, pitch, concentricity), the LM-1030 online laser diameter gauge for continuous fiber and wire diameter, plus 3D white-light interferometry and confocal sensors for end-face geometry and surface topography.
The HM-1040 specification quotes ±0.08 μm repeatability under controlled conditions. Real production repeatability depends on clamping, part presentation and environment, which is why we publish actual test data rather than only datasheet numbers.
An image measuring head captures a two-dimensional field of view and measures many features at once (holes, distances, contours) on parts presented one by one. A laser diameter gauge measures one diameter continuously at very high speed on parts moving through the gauge without stopping.
Yes. The inline measuring software supports PLC integration, pass/fail output and result upload; positioning correction runs automatically on each measurement cycle.
