A CNC turning or milling cell produces parts whose critical dimensions — outer diameter, overall length, groove diameter and groove width, chamfer angles, circle diameters — sit on the same side of the part and can be captured by a single telecentric image. A flash measuring machine (one-click image dimension measurement system) reads all of them in one shot, without moving the part between features. This page sets out which machined-part dimensions suit one-shot imaging, which do not, and the accuracy figures that apply, using the POMEAS IMAGE 3 series as the reference hardware.
Machined parts are dimensionally stable: metal, cleaned, measured at room temperature. Unlike soft rubber or translucent plastic, a steel or aluminium workpiece presents sharp edges that a backlit telecentric optic can locate repeatably. The measurement is non-contact, so nothing mars a finished surface, and one image replaces a stack of hand-gauge checks (micrometer for OD, height gauge for length, ring gauge for grooves). For a QC bench next to the CNC cell, that difference compounds across every shift.
In one image, the IMAGE 3 series measures:
Two honest limits: a 2D flash system does not measure thread pitch diameter by optical silhouette alone (see our note on screw and fastener measurement), and it does not read coaxiality or runout between two diameters, because those are rotation-defined tolerances. Parts needing those checks go to a roundness tester or CMM route — see instant measurement vs CMM.
| Model | Precision-mode range (X×Y×Z) | Wide-field range (X×Y×Z) | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|---|
| IMAGE 3 | 18 × 18 mm (fixed platform) | Ø100 mm | Small turned parts: pins, bushings, inserts |
| IMAGE 3 PLUS | 118 × 118 × 75 mm | 200 × 200 × 75 mm | Medium shafts, flanges, brackets |
| IMAGE 3 PRO / PRO-H | 218 × 118 × 75 mm | 300 × 200 × 75 mm | Long shafts, multi-feature plates, tray batches |
| IMAGE 3 MAX / MAX2 | 205 × 104 / 206 × 106 × 75 mm | 223 × 118 / 225 × 125 × 75 mm | Tightest tolerance parts; optional 8055 spectral confocal height sensor |
The wide-field mode trades stage travel for a one-shot view of up to 300 × 200 mm, which is what allows a tray of small machined parts to be measured in a single image.

| IMAGE 3 MAX / MAX2 | ±1 | ±(1.5+0.02L) | ±1.5 | ±(2+0.02L) |
Read the conditions before comparing any two machines: "connected" figures include the positioning error between fields, and L is the measured length in mm. Repeatability is ±0.5 µm in precision mode on the standard models and ±0.25 µm on the MAX series. How these terms fit together is set out in how to read an instant measurement accuracy spec.
The question buyers actually ask is whether this can sit on the production line and read outer diameter and overall length of machined parts inline. The honest positioning: the IMAGE 3 series is an instant, one-click bench system — a part comes off the machine or out of the tray, is placed on the stage, and every in-plane dimension is reported in seconds. For high-volume dedicated in-line gauging (100% on the conveyor), a fixed online measurement station is the better-matched product family; the IMAGE 3 covers first-article, sampling and lot inspection at the cell. If you are replacing an older optical comparator or manual VMM station, see replacing a flash measurement or VMM station.
Place the part, click, and the software identifies the features and outputs the report — no program-writing for standard features. Reported cycle is seconds per part in precision mode, and a wide-field tray shot replaces dozens of individual measurements. Results export to SPC charts so drift on a turning tool shows up before scrap does: the loop is described in flash measurement SPC reporting.
The IMAGE 3 PRO covers 218 × 118 × 75 mm in precision mode and 300 × 200 × 75 mm in wide-field mode, so a 150 mm shaft fits within the precision-mode stage range. The MAX series adds ±1 µm non-connected accuracy and an optional 8055 spectral confocal sensor if the shaft also has height or step features.
Yes. Groove silhouette appears against the backlight, and the software measures groove diameter, groove width and shoulder positions in the same shot as the outer diameter and overall length. Undercut features with no optical access remain a limit of any silhouette-based method.
On the IMAGE 3 MAX in precision mode the non-connected figure is ±1 µm; on the PRO it is ±2 µm. In connected (stitched) mode the formula adds 0.02 × L, so at L = 50 mm the connected figure is ±(1.5 + 1) = ±2.5 µm on the MAX series.
For standard geometric features — diameters, distances, angles, radii — the software recognises edges and outputs dimensions without a written routine. Recurring inspection plans with report templates can be saved so operators only place the part and click.
Yes. Small parts arranged in a tray on the wide-field stage (up to 300 × 200 mm on the PRO) are measured in one image, and the software reports each part separately. This is the same multi-cavity logic described for stamped parts.
Clean, dry parts measure best. Oil film or chips on a feature edge shift the apparent edge position in any optical system; wipe or blow off the measuring faces first. The non-contact method itself does not wear or mark the part.
Send one part drawing or a physical part, and we will confirm which IMAGE 3 model covers your dimensions and tolerance, and which features — if any — need a different route. Requests go through the product page: POMEAS IMAGE 3 Instant Vision Measuring System.
